Ghaziabad City with an average annual population growth rate: 5.20%

In a latest survey, based on past growth trends and forecasts by international and national statistics organizations, City Mayors reveal that India houses 11 of the World’s fastest growing 50 cities.

The study thus breaks the popular myth that world’s most populous cities are in China and also shifts the spotlight on urban areas spanning the Middle East to Mali.

While Beihai from China topped the list of cities that is expected to clock fastest average annual population growth from 2006 to 2020 to the extent of 10.58%, India’s Ghaziabad was tagged as second fastest growing city in the world on the back of construction boom in the city.
Surat, India’s diamond city, with 4.99% population growth rate is at coveted 4th position in the world and 2nd fastest growing city in India.

Also making it to the top 10 is Faridabad,  which has emerged as the major industrial hub in the country in recent times.

Surprisingly, Nashik, the wine capital of India, was 16th followed by rapidly growing Patna, that notched the 21st spot led by its dominance in the agricultural sector.

Clearly the focus is shifting from the metropolitan cities as Delhi occupies the 28th position while Mumbai and Kolkata find no place at all, which could be due to lower cost of living, better infrastructure, better work-life balance and lucrative jobs. Although some argue that smaller Indian cities have a lot to achieve to be counted amongst India’s best, we believe they have already caught up with the bigger players in terms of fast-paced development and urbanization.
